100 Deadliest Days

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is often referred to as the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer. During these months, traffic fatalities—especially among teens—spike dramatically. With school out and more people traveling for vacations, parties, and outdoor activities, the roads become busier and more dangerous.

Key Risks Include:
  • Distracted driving (especially texting)
  • Driving under the influence
  • Speeding
  • Inexperience behind the wheel (particularly among teen drivers)
  • Fatigue
Safety Tips:
  • Stay focused and avoid distractions
  • Always wear your seatbelt
  • Never drive impaired—use a designated driver or ride service
  • Obey speed limits and traffic laws
  • Ensure teen drivers understand the risks and rules of the road
  • Let’s all do our part to keep ourselves and others safe this summer. A few smart choices can save lives.

ER Department Shoutout

A STEMI aka ST-elevation myocardial infarction is a type of heart attack this is more serious and has a greater risk of serious complications and death. This type of heart attack happens when there is blockage of blood supply to the lower part of the heart. Any heart attack is serious and requires immediate medical attention. With a STEMI, the lower part of the heart is comprised of two ventricles, which are the "pump" that moves blood through the lungs and body.  When these are damaged, the pump can fail. It gets it's name from the changes in the heart's electrical conduction system that are seen on an electrocardiogram (ECG). Rapid treatment is essential to restore blood flow to the damaged part of the heart to try and decrease damage caused by lack of blood flow.
We had a gentleman present to our ED at 11:44 complaining of chest pain and feeling clammy that started around 30 minutes before coming to the ED.
His ECG was completed within 5 minutes of his arrival. ED provider spoke with interventional cardiologist that was on campus at the time.  Decision made to take the patient to our cardiac catheterization lab.
26 minutes after he arrived he was in the cath lab
44 minutes after he arrived, the Interventional Cardiologist had threaded catheter through blockage inflated the balloon and restored blood flow.  After deflating and removing the balloon stents were deployed.
ED staff and cath lab staff did an awesome job!
